Advances in connected cosmetics

With the My UV Patch, L'Oréal has entered the era of electronic sensors. This adhesive patch precisely measures the wearer’s exposure to UV rays. It is connected to a smartphone application that alerts the wearer when his or her sun protection becomes insufficient, and offers customised advice.

UV Patch: a second skin that measures UV exposure

This ultra-thin self-adhesive patch, fitted with an electronic sensor, directly measures the wearer’s exposure to sunrays. It analyses precisely how much UV radiation the body receives. Its surface is made up of photosensitive squares, and changes in their colour measure in real time the immediate and cumulative doses of UV rays received, over several hours or even days.

Personalised protection measures

The patch works with a smartphone application; the wearer simply scans the patch with his or her phone. Thanks to a specific algorithm, the application uses graphs and statistics to provide advice on or for optimal sun protection.
It takes skin colour into consideration and offers personalised recommendations. The application alerts the user when UV protection becomes insufficient. The My UV Patch was launched in 2016 by La Roche-Posay, a brand that has proven its commitment to helping consumers protect their skin from the sun.

Shared innovation drives connected beauty

The UV Patch is an innovation developed by the Connected Beauty Incubator, created by L’Oréal in 2014. The patch was developed in partnership with two American start-ups: MC10, which strives to provide digital solutions that improve human health, and PCH, which handled mass production. The Incubator’s goal is to invent the products and services of the future by combining cosmetics research and digital innovation.
