Lindsay Owen-Jones among world's 100 most influential people
For the first time this year TIME, the American magazine, published a ranking of the 100 most influential people in the world, in a range of categories (politics, economics, science, arts, etc). Among them, Mr Owen-Jones, L’Oréal’s CEO, is part of the world’s 20 “Builders and titans”.
“The People Who Shape Our World”
“The People Who Shape Our World” are such well-known movers and shakers as US President George Bush, business leader Warren Buffet, South Africa’s Nelson Mandela and Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling.
According to the US weekly, the list includes “those whose power, influence or moral example touches the lives of all of us, right now.” Individuals were selected according to different criteria, including their public stature, influence over world current events, their moral or ethical standing, and their importance in our daily lives.
The list comprised five categories: “Leaders and Revolutionaries” with Pope John Paul II, Vladimir Putin…, ”Builders and Titans” with Rupert Murdoch, Michael Dell…, “Scientists and Thinkers” such as Jurgen Habermas and Bernard Lewis…, “Heroes and Icons” like the Dalai Lama or David Beckham, and “Artists and Entertainers”: Nicole Kidman, John Galliano or Peter Jackson…
Leader in Global Beauty
In the Builders and Titans section, Time writer Jenny Jones describes Mr. Owen-Jones as the man who “globalized beauty” and “transformed L’Oréal “into the world’s largest cosmetics company”. Taking Maybelline, acquired in 1996, as a case in point, Time says the Group gave the US brand “a marketing face-lift and sent it out to conquer the world.” Mr. Owen-Jones told the magazine, “I had what was perhaps an unrealistic ambition: to put a Maybelline lipstick in the hand of every woman in China”. Not so crazy according to the magazine : since Maybelline’s introduction in China in 1998, 95% of Chinese women recognize the brand thanks to the enormous popularity of products such as Water Shine Diamonds lipstick.
“Dream rather than Simply Plan”
Mr. Owen-Jones has spent his entire career at L’Oréal, having been with the company since graduating from business school in 1969. Time posits the ability to stay “one step ahead of his customer” as one of Mr. Owen-Jones defining characteristics. Indeed, when asked what he sees as the key to being a successful business leader, L’Oréal’s CEO answered, “The ability to dream rather than simply plan.”
