To ensure the safety and quality of future products, L’Oréal evaluates the safety of ingredients very early on, through a rigorous predictive process featuring innovative methods.

Predictive evaluation is a meticulous process bolstered by an arsenal of biological and technological tools that enables the assessment of the safety of product ingredients.

L’Oréal has not engaged in animal testing for finished products since 1989, nor for ingredients since 2013, in compliance with European regulations. The Group has helped develop alternative testing methods, several of which–notably those relating to eye irritation and skin allergies–were adopted by the OECD in 2017.

A wealth of data for optimal safety

The wealth of knowledge and data on ingredients and the predictive methods L’Oréal has at its disposal represent significant added value. Big data processing can help take full advantage of this rich knowledge base.

Using reconstructed skin to test product performance

Tissue engineering is a key component of this dynamic approach. Reconstructed human tissue (skin, cornea, mucous membranes, etc.) enables us to build biological understanding of the skin. It also constitutes an important tool for conducting product application and skin reaction tests including ageing, UV exposure, and pollution.
