Professional beauty committed to protecting the planet

The Professional Products Division is keen to embark the entire hairstylist community on the sustainability journey with the roll-out of its Hairstylists for the Future programme. An overview of the initiatives conducted in 2021.

Hairstylists for the Future

As part of the Group’s sustainability programme, L’Oréal for the Future, the Professional Products Division launched Hairstylists for the Future, a global programme that represents a completely new environmental approach for hair salons, focused on three main areas: cutting water consumption, reducing energy use and recycling waste.

To improve in-salon water consumption, the Division has launched L’Oréal Water Saver, a showerhead developed in partnership with startup Gjosa, which can reduce the amount of water used in salons by up to 65%. The disruptive technology was ranked among the 100 Best Inventions of 2021 by Time magazine.

To promote more efficient energy use, the Division is running an awareness campaign to encourage its partners to choose renewable energy suppliers and adopt LED lighting. On the waste management front, the aim is to collect 100% of salon waste. In Europe, L’Oréal has partnered with Veolia and Elise to accurately track the treatment of its waste, including plastic, cardboard and hair.

Unveiled in 2021 at the World Expo in Dubai, the Hairstylists for the Future programme will be rolled out in salons worldwide in 2022. The Division will continue to support hairstylists on this sustainability journey, in a transition crucial for the future of the planet and for consumers, who are increasingly conscious of best practices to protect the environment.

Controlled use of resources

Throughout the value chain—in everything from product design and use by stylists and end-customers to waste production and recycling—the Division is committed to reducing the environmental impact of its products. 85% of its products worldwide are made in carbon-neutral plants and 40% are made in Waterloop plants that recycle water from the production phase.

The Division is also committed to optimising plastic, a challenge the brands are embracing to minimise the use of virgin plastic and cultivate a circular economy. For example, shampoo bottles for Série Expert by L’Oréal Professionnel, Kérastase, Redken and Matrix are now all made from at least 95% recycled plastic.
